Autumn Koehler, Clinical Social Work Intern—Hi! I’m so glad you’re here. My name is Autumn (she/her), and I am a Clinical Social Work Intern providing therapy services while completing my Master of Social Work degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I am passionate about creating an inclusive space where you feel seen, heard, and supported as you navigate the journey of life.

You may be feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or weighed down by anxiety, depression, or past experiences that still feel close to the surface. You might struggle with perfectionism, boundaries, relationships, or questions about identity. Some people I work with are also navigating the emotional weight of type 1 diabetes and/or chronic illness.

It is common for people to come into therapy believing they need to “fix” themselves, as if they are damaged or broken. I don’t believe you are broken. Our work together is not about fixing you; it is about reconnecting with the wholeness that already exists within you.

You are the expert of your own life. My goal is to work collaboratively with you to make the hard stuff easier to sit with and to create a space where you feel safe processing your experiences, accessing your own wisdom, and exploring what matters most to you.

I am committed to fostering inclusivity and work from an anti-racist, LGBTQIA+ affirming, and social justice-informed lens. My approach is collaborative, integrative, trauma-informed, person-centered, compassionate, holistic, and non-judgmental. I place great importance on the therapeutic relationship and strive to create an environment grounded in empathy, kindness, curiosity, humor, respect, and meaningful connection.

Type 1 Diabetes

I specialize in supporting individuals of all ages living with type 1 diabetes, including concerns related to distress, burnout, new diagnosis, coping, family stress, life transitions, and more. Living with type 1 diabetes often involves an invisible emotional load—constant decision making, vigilance, and uncertainty that others may not fully see.

I have lived with type 1 diabetes for over 20 years, which inspires my work in helping others feel less alone as they navigate the highs and lows of living with a chronic illness. I am also the author of Type 1 Diabetes. What Now?! Adulthood: A Guide for Teens with Type 1 Diabetes Transitioning into Adulthood.

Areas of Focus

I work with teens and adults navigating:

• Anxiety
• Depression
• Trauma
• Grief
• Gender dysphoria
• Identity exploration
• Self-esteem
• Type 1 diabetes/Diabetes distress/burnout

My Approach

You are a uniquely formed human being who deserves a therapeutic experience tailored to your needs and paced in a way that feels comfortable for you because therapy is not a “one-size-fits-all” approach.

I incorporate therapeutic techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), attachment-based work, and mindfulness-based practices.

Wherever you are in your journey, you do not have to navigate it alone. I would be honored to work alongside you as we explore your experiences and move toward a life that feels more aligned with your strengths, values, and goals.
